Why do we love Acacia wood for our spoons?

  1. It’s light AF, meaning you can stir that risotto all night long.
  2. Strong, like very strong—2,300 psi on the Janka scale, or in non-technical speak, stronger than maple, beech, and bamboo.
  3. Last but not least, we can’t stop staring at the stunning grain patterns.

Why should I appreciate the wooden spoon? 

Trends come and go, but the wooden spoon remains a reliable tool. They basically do it all. Soup? Stir Fry? Eggs? Batter? Risotto? Not to mention how effective they are when waved in the air to make a point. Wooden spoons will never fail to have you covered.

The chefs we spoke to agree the 14” length is ideal. It’s long enough for the handle to sit safely outside of a pot or pan without being so long that it’s a fight to use or store. And acacia wood, when taken care of, is strong enough to stand the test of time—no splits in sight.

Recently the old school kitchen tool is sporting all kinds of new bells and whistles, but at Tomato Wheels we are all about the basics. And the basic wooden spoon is a staple for a reason.

What’s the Wooden Spoon with a Slant Flat Top for?

The Corner Scraper spoon shape allows you to reach all the little bits at the bottom of a pot or skillet. For example, if you’re stirring something that might burn if left still, like a roux to top off homemade mac and cheese, a flat-topped spoon allows you to cover the entire pan surface, getting right up to the edges of the pan in a way that a curved spoon cannot. Don’t know what a roux is? Time to call grand-mère.

What’s the Perforated Wooden Spoon for?

The perforated spoon allows liquid to drain through while you are stirring which reduces the chances of you breaking what’s in the pot when you’re making things like stews, soups, and risottos.  

The perforation also allows you to pick up meats, veggies, pastas, or other larger ingredients while simultaneously draining the liquid. Genius right? 

How do I care for my wooden spoons?

Taking care of your wooden spoon will ensure you have it for years to come. We have even met spoons that have been passed down for generations! There are two faux pas when it comes to caring for your wooden spoons: soaking them in water and putting them in the dishwasher. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR SPOONS. If the wood absorbs too much water, it can swell and it will eventually crack. The high heat of the dishwasher will also cause your wooden spoon to lose its finish. 

Take an extra minute to care for your spoons—we promise it’s worth it:

  1. Hand wash your wooden spoons with soap and warm water (just do it).
  2. Dry with a towel instead of air drying. Moisture is the enemy.
  3. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can rub a small amount of mineral oil into the spoon with a soft cloth, about once a month. This will form a protective yet flexible barrier that will help control the wood’s natural desire to fluctuate its moisture content. By deterring this, you help prevent fading, cracking and splitting, and also help the wood become more resistant to absorbing stains and odors.
    1. Don’t just use any oil you have laying around. It is important to use the right oil that will protect your wood but also not impart flavors or weird additives to your wood. It needs to be protective, reduce moisture intake, and be breathable—and most importantly be food safe
    2. Petroleum based oils like Mineral Oil (food safe) are also recommended. It penetrates the wood grain really well, it doesn't go rancid, and doesn't leave a sticky residue, plus it is odorless. We recommend Butcher Block by Early Wood Designs, with organic lemon peel oil. The organic lemon peel oil is not only refreshing to smell, but its antimicrobial properties will help keep your utensils safe for years to come. 

Real talk: The only drawback to using wooden spoons is that they can sometimes retain the flavour of pungent foods. If you find this happening, get two wooden spoons, and reserve one for sweet foods and one for savory. You could call this a minor shortcoming, but we prefer to think of it as an excuse to expand your collection.

How can I use my kitchen towel?

  1. Use it as your toddler’s bib
  2. Use it as your own bib (lobster not required)
  3. Play maitre d and wrap it around your wine bottle before pouring
  4. Fold it up to protect your table from a hot pot 
  5. Impress your friends and wear it over your shoulder while answering the door holding a glass of box wine 
  6. At the end of the day when it comes to cooking casual is the secret ingredient, so you do you 

How do I care for my kitchen towel?

Caring for your kitchen towel is as easy as popping it in the wash with your other beloved kitchen linens—oh, is that just us?

In case you need a reminder:

  1. Machine wash
  2. Tumble dry, low temperature
  3. Optional: Iron, low temperature (We know, it seems high maintenance, but if you want it to hang nice, take an extra minute and just do it)
